| The Thompson
House is an award winning 24-unit Independent Living facility on the
grounds of the New England Homes for the Deaf. It is designed for
low-income Deaf elderly or disabled people. Each unity has state-of-the-art
equipment that enables the residents to live as independently as possible.
All
units have signaling systems that can
alert
residents in case of fire
allow them to answer the phone and doorbell from inside the
house
inform staff in case of a medical emergency
Each
unit has
one
bedroom with a closet
living room
kitchen
bathroom
The
facility
laundry
room with 3 washers and 3 dryers
individual storage space for each resident
community room for meetings and recreational activities for
the resident use
The Thompson
House has a onsite manager fluent in American Sign Language available
during office hours.
Qualification:
Applicants
and/or their spouses must be:
Deaf
or Deaf-blind and able to benefit from the unique communication,
culture and visual/tactile accessibility features provided.
Elderly (age 62) or Disabled
Meet Federal standards for Very Low Income Status (50% of the Area
Median as published by HUD).
Have a clean background, free from drug arrests or criminal activity.
Special consideration
is given to applicants deemed at risk due to physical/social isolation,
as well as those in fear of premature institutionalization.
